A nonnuclear electromagnetic radiation of very short wavelength, in the interval of 0.1-100 angstroms: i.e., between that of gamma rays and ultraviolet radiation. A penetrating electromagnetic radiation similar to gamma radiation. Originates from the extranuclear part of an atom.
