Welcome to the 2024 SPWLA International Student Paper Contest

The SPWLA Board of Directors, VP-Education, and 2024 International Student Paper Contest (ISPC) Chair invite SPWLA student members to participate in the 2024 SPWLA International Student Paper Contest. The ISPC will be held on online and in person on Sunday, May 19, 2024, as part of SPWLA 65th Annual Symposium, May 18-22, 2024, at Sheraton Grand Rio Hotel & Resort in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Students at an accredited university or having graduated from within 12 months preceding the ISPC are qualified and invited to submit their paper at their relevant degree category: Undergraduate (B.Sc.), Masters (M.Sc.), or Doctorate (Ph.D.).

To be eligible for presentation at the ISPC, the paper must be authored and presented by a qualifying student(s) and must not have been submitted (even with no decision), accepted, presented, or published to any other venue, conference, or publication, including those of the SPWLA itself.

Guidelines and deadlines for the ISPC are elsewhere on this web page, including instructions for students and chapters participating in their SPWLA Student Chapter Internal Paper Contest. Students or chapters are welcome to email papercompetition@spwla.org for further information or questions.

Instructions for the Internal and International Student Paper Contests 

There are slightly different instructions for the Internal and International Student Paper Contests.  Please read each carefully.

2024 International Student Paper Contest (ISPC)

• The ISPC will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2024, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the Sheraton Grand Rio Hotel & Resort.
• Students at an accredited university or having graduated from within 12 months preceding the ISPC are qualified and invited to submit their paper at their relevant degree category: Undergraduate (B.Sc.), Masters (M.Sc.), or Doctorate (Ph.D.)
• Students affiliated with a local SPWLA Student Chapter must first submit and present their paper (abstract and presentation only) to their Student Chapter as part of the Internal Student Chapter Paper Contest (ISCPC). The local Student Chapter will rank and nominate up to three students at each degree category from their chapter to submit to the ISPC. ISCPC are run independently by the local Student Chapter and must be complete by Friday, March 1, 2024.
• Students without a local SPWLA Student Chapter are invited to submit their paper at their relevant degree category directly to ISPC.
• All papers must be submitted to the ISPC online by Friday, March 1, 2024. There are no exemptions.
• All paper submissions to the ISPC must include online entry form, online abstract, and online sponsoring professor declaration.
• All papers submitted to the ISPC are allowed multiple student author(s)/presenter(s) and faculty author(s). Awards conferred at the ISPC are shared equally among student presenter(s). Faculty author(s) must have mentored or contributed directly to the study and are not allowed to present.
• To be eligible for presentation at the ISPC, the paper must be authored and presented by a qualifying student(s) and must not have been submitted (even with no decision), accepted, presented, or published to any other venue, conference, or publication, including those of the SPWLA itself.
• Students selected to present at the ISPC will be notified by email by Friday, March 15, 2024.
• Students selected to present at the ISPC must submit presentation file (MS PowerPoint attachment) online by Saturday, May 4, 2024. All presentations must use the ISPC template, downloadable online.

2024 Internal Student Chapter Paper Contest (ISCPC)

The ISCPC must be completed and nominated students from each SPWLA Student Chapter must have submitted their paper online to ISPC by Friday, March 1, 2024.
• SPWLA Student Chapters are individually responsible for holding their ISCPC, including call for abstracts, submission instructions, and selection of winning nominations.
• SPWLA Student Chapters are eligible for financial support up to $500 USD to hold their ISCPC, upon approval by SPWLA VP Education.
• SPWLA Student Chapters must submit their plans for holding their ISCPC, including any request for financial support, to SPWLA VP Education (papercompetition@spwla.org) on or before Wednesday, January 10, 2024, to qualify for approval of financial support.
• SPWLA Student Chapters must select a minimum of three judges for their ISCPC, including at least one Faculty from the accredited university. Students are not eligible to serve as judges.
• Up to three papers (winning nominations from the ISCPC) within each degree level category (B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D.) may be submitted from each SPWLA Student Chapter to the ISPC.
• To be eligible to participate in the ISPC, nominated papers must be authored and presented by qualifying student(s) and must not have been submitted (even with no decision), accepted, presented, or published to any other venue, conference, or publication, including those of the SPWLA itself.

International Student Paper Contest –
a note on Abstract Information

Please make sure the abstract includes the following:

Problem Statement: describe the problem that motivates the paper proposal.

Methodology: describe approach to the problem solution with particular emphasis on innovative procedures that differentiate the methods.

Result and Conclusions: describe significant results and major technical contributions, lesson learned from the study, application of the findings, and opportunities to further deploy methods.

Please consider uploading a supporting figure with your abstract that summarizes a central result.

Abstract should between 200-500 words.
