Scholarship and Grant Applications

Applications for Scholarships and Grants are due by Monday, April 1st 2024.

Selection of awardees of SPWLA scholarships and grants is based upon the competitive evaluation of applications received by the Scholarship and Grant Committee of the Foundation. The international activities of the SPWLA permit and encourage the submitter of applications by qualified candidates attending or affiliated with colleges or universities either in the U.S. or abroad. The relevancy of an applicant’s degree program and career objectives to formation evaluation will count highly toward a successful award.

What is the Difference between a Scholarship and a Grant?

The intent of the SPWLA Foundation is to support the hopes, aspirations, ambitions and financial needs of students and faculty in courses of study and research in subjects applicable to a career in formation evaluation or related disciplines.

Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students to offset expenses including tuition, books, supplies, housing, meals, and sundry expenses incurred by students by awarding scholarship funds.

Grants are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students, and faculty members. The purpose of grant funds is the support of all or part of certain costs associated with special studies, research projects, thesis projects, laboratory experiments, or other approvable purposes. Examples of such support include, but are not limited to, the purchase of core samples, other forms of field data, purchase of copies of project-related references or reports, purchase of special-purpose material, supplies, components, or instruments for experimental purposes, purchase of computer time, etc.

A student may apply for both a Scholarship and a Grant (given the difference in the purposes of the award) if the student qualifies under both criteria.

Of course, faculty members are ineligible for Scholarships, and only rarely do undergraduates qualify for Grants, although they might if involved in individual research projects. The Scholarship and Grant Committee will base its awards based upon their ranking of the applications in a seriatim by each Committee member.

Applications for SPWLA Scholarships and Grants is now closed for 2024.

They will reopen for 2025 in October 2024.
